AM Radio Reception Tips

Here are some tips to help you improve your radio reception:

  • Face the radio in different directions until you find the best reception.
  • Locate the radio near a window.
  • Locate the radio away from sources of interference such as light dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, computers, microwave ovens, TV’s, VCR’s or other electronic devices.
  • Try turning off all of the above items. If the interference goes away or is reduced, turn them back on one at a time to identify what is causing the interference.

  • Install interference filters on the radio’s power cord. One type plugs into the wall, then your radio plugs into it. Another type is designed for you to wrap a small section of the radio’s power cord around the filter.
  • Try other radios. Some radios are less susceptible to interference.
  • Hook an external “AM loop” antenna to your radio if your radio has a connection for such an antenna. Rotate the antenna for best reception and locate it for best reception.
  • Do an Internet search of “AM Radio Reception” on google.com for other tips.
  • Some radio programs are available on the Internet. Click on “Schedule” and then click on the program to see if it is available on their website.

At night we are required to reduce the power output of our radio station. This will greatly affect radio reception in most areas of town. In some cases you may still be able to improve night reception by following the tips above
